What comes after Keyboards & Mouse? Project Mirage

Founded by Apoorv Shankar, former Vice President of Hardware at Ultrahuman, the company recently debuted three conceptual devices at CES designed to augment traditional workflows through hardware and software integration.

Project Mirage focuses on new input mechanisms that aim to reduce the friction of repetitive digital tasks. The prototypes showcased offer a glimpse into a future where peripheral hardware is increasingly context-aware and powered by large language models (LLMs).

The Prototype Lineup: Dune, Shift, and Radiance

Project Mirage’s current roadmap consists of three distinct devices, each targeting a different aspect of the modern digital lifestyle:

1. Dune: Context-Aware Shortcuts

Dune is a minimalist, battery-powered three-button peripheral designed for Mac and Windows. Unlike traditional macro pads that require manual programming, Dune is designed to be context-aware. The device attempts to learn a user’s most frequent shortcuts across various apps and websites, automatically suggesting actions for its three buttons. These actions range from simple commands like “copy” to complex, multi-step automated workflows.

2. Shift: Task Automation for iOS

Shift is a mobile-centric device geared toward iOS users. It focuses on automating recurring daily tasks. By utilizing OpenAI’s LLMs, Shift allows users to trigger specific actions, such as ordering a frequent Uber ride, a specific meal on DoorDash, or a weekly grocery list on Instacart, with a single physical press. Currently, the device supports a limited selection of third-party applications.

3. Radiance: The AI Meeting Controller

The most complex of the trio, Radiance, is a dedicated controller for virtual meetings. Beyond standard hardware toggles for camera, microphone, and volume, it features a “Join” button that integrates with a user’s calendar and email. The system scans for video call links, even those not officially formatted as calendar events, and opens the appropriate meeting software within a customizable window.

Radiance also incorporates several AI-driven software features, including:

  • AI Note: An automated transcription service that generates meeting summaries.

  • Voice Modulation: Utilizing technology from Eleven Labs, this feature can alter the user’s vocal tone in real-time to sound more alert or professional, regardless of their actual physical state.
