Kyoto-based developer Q-Games has officially announced PixelJunk Monsters 3, the latest entry in its long-running tower defense franchise. Unveiled during the Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026, the game is being developed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original PixelJunk Monsters release.
Along with the debut announcement trailer, Q-Games revealed that a limited public playtest will take place in early September on PC via Steam.
What’s New in PixelJunk Monsters 3
PixelJunk Monsters 3 returns to the series’ hand-drawn aesthetic, updated for 4K resolution. The core gameplay loop remains centered on players running across maps, dancing to upgrade structures, and building towers to defend against waves of incoming enemies.
Key details announced for the upcoming title include:
Roguelike Elements: New mechanics introduced to add strategic variation and replayability across runs.
Co-Op Modes: Support for up to two players in both local couch co-op and online multiplayer.
Expanded Content: New tower types, enemy variations, and boss encounters.
Localization: Launch support planned for 13 languages, including English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Korean, and Simplified/Traditional Chinese.

PC Playtest Schedule and How to Join
To mark Q-Games’ 25th anniversary as a studio, a 120-hour private playtest will run exclusively for members of the official Q-Games Discord server

Start: Sept. 3, 2026, at 6:00 PM PDT / Sept. 4, 2026, at 3:00 AM CEST / 10:00 AM JST
End: Sept. 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM PDT / Sept. 9, 2026, at 3:00 AM CEST / 10:00 AM JST
Eligibility:
Access is limited to PC via Steam. Players must join the Q-Games Discord server prior to the event to receive instructions on accessing the playtest build.
